ABSTRACT: The study area is Alipaşa open pit albite mine which takes place in Aydın, Çine-Karpuzlu. Onlyleucocratic orthogneiss rock unit outcrops out in the mine. The albite mineralisation located in the N25Edirection with 900 m length and in the N65W direction with 120 m width. 45 m thickness below the presentmine base (395 m) of the open pit has been planned to be mined. The scope of this study is to determinethe optimum overall slope angle of the eastern slopes of the mine at the time which the mining operationsare terminated. In this context, based on the detailed field investigation and laboratory tests performed onthe rock material, numerical analyses for the deep slopes (H>100 m) were conducted. In the numericalmodelling, applicability of the finite element method (FEM) considering the Generalized Hoek-BrownCriterion and Equivalent Mohr-Coulomb parameters to the jointed rock slopes in the study area wasinvestigated. In this process, firstly five geotechnical cross-sections passing through the area affected fromlocal rock block slides were taken; secondly stability analyses of the overall slopes along these crosssections considering the variations of Geological Strength Index (GSI), seismic acceleration coefficient, slope angle and water table location (WTL) were conducted by using a two-dimensional FEM softwarePhase2 V.7.013. The causes and mechanisms of the slope instabilities, the factor of safety values (stressreduction factors: SRF) for each cross-section were determined. The results obtained from each criterionwere compared by statistical software SPSS V.15.0.1 to determine the optimum overall slope angle interms of the best fitting criterion for the orthogneisses.
ABSTRACT: The studies related the deposition of the spoil piles, which is obtained by mining excavation in openpit mines, and the reclamation of the depositional areas are very important to overcome the induceddestruction of the nature. A significant part of these studies is the investigation of the slope stability ofspoil piles. In this study, slope stability analyses have been performed for the spoil piles of the Sekköyopen pit mine in Muğla-Milas. Experimental results indicated that the spoil material includes nearlyequal amount of coarse and fine grains, and has low plasticity index. With the purpose of determiningthe mobilized shear strength parameters at the time of failure, back analyses have been performed forthe spoil pile failures observed in the study area. The comparison of data from the back analyses and thelaboratory tests reveals that residual strength values were mobilized at the time of failure for the spoilmaterial. By considering the data obtained and the field observations, one and multi-bench economicaland safe slope design analyses have been performed for the spoil piles in the study area in accordancewith the rules in the regulation on reclamation of the sites destructed by mining applications. Accordingto the results of the analyses for 10, 20 and 30 m slope heights, 20-40° and 19° overall slope angle valueswere determined for one and multi-bench slopes, respectively
ABSTRACT: Almost all granite, gabbro and basalt quarries have been abandoned in the last ten years, especiallyin the eastern Black Sea Region because of high operation costs and cheap hard rock entrance to Turkeyfrom the countries such as China and India. In the study, the Saraftepe hard rock quarry in the TrabzonCity was selected as a pilot site for encouraging and developing the hard rock production in the region, and the formation condition and geological properties of the operated tephrites in the quarry wereinvestigated. Thickness of the operating tephrite varies between 25 and 30 meters and it crops out along750 meters. This tephrite sill intruded in the N70E/25NW directed limestone, marl, sandstone and tufflayers. Geomechanical properties of the tephrite samples were investigated and some laboratory testswere conducted on the rock samples obtained from different zones because there is an anisotropic structurefrom top to bottom in the sill. The result of the conducted tests on the rock samples obtained from thedifferent zones show that their uniaxial compressive strength values are between 87 and 130 MPa, p-wavevelocities are between 5048 and 5642 m/s, density values are between 2.58 and 2.68 g/cm3, apparentporosity values are between 2.77 and 4.54 % and water absorption by weight are between 1.04 and 1.78%. The weight lost at the end of the freezing-thawing test and wetting-drying tests are 0.36 and 0.22 %,respectively. These test results shows there is % 10 strength loss at the end of the tests. Considering the allinvestigation results, the studied tephrite will contribute to the regional economy.
